Why Do Golf Balls Have Numbers On Them?

What’s the highest number that can be on a golf ball? Are they random, or can you buy golf balls with certain desired numbers on them?

Golf balls have numbers on them so you can identify them in the fairway, rough, or the woods if you’re playing with others who are using the same ball. Ideally you shouldn’t use the same numbers if you play the same ball as one of your playing partners. It just makes it easier to identify. My brother and I play Nike balls, but he seldomly hits the ball in the fairway so it’s not difficult to distinguish whose ball belongs to who. As far as the varying numbers, it’s dependent on the manufacturer. I saw a ball with 2 digits on it. I want to say it was a TaylorMade ball, but I’m not totally sure. I’ve played a ball with a 0 on it and I’ve seen a ball with a 9 on it. Like I said before, it depends on the manufacturer.

So if you and a friend are playing the same brand and neither of you ‘mark’ your ball, you will be able to which ball belong to which player.

So you won’t be confused with who’s balls who.
