How To Improve Your Short Game – Feel, Imagination, and Technique

The short game in golf is an acquired skill. This part of the game requires feel, imagination, and technique. And I think that is a good order in terms of importance. The short game can literally save an awful ball striking round and make the score look pretty respectable when you’re done.

Golfer are always looking for ways to improve their short game and when you really look at it, it comes down to having good touch/feel, imagination, and technique. So lets discuss ways to improve your short game keeping these things in mind.

1. Work on your touch around the greens. A great practice technique to improve your feel around the greens is to be able to fly the ball in the air and land it fairly close to where you want it to. For example. Lets say you are off the green chipping up hill to the hole and you have about 40 feet of green to work with. Experiment with a few different clubs and take notice of the results. Take a PW, a 9 iron, and a 56 degree sand wedge. For each pick out a spot somewhere on the first part of the green and try to fly the ball to that spot and see how far it rolls. More than likely you will end up gong with something like the wedge or 9 iron.

When you can consistently fly the ball in the air and land it close to your mark around the green you will be more consistent.

2. Work on your imagination. Similar to the last tip you should experiment with different clubs around the green. Just for fun try chipping with a 4 or 5 iron and work on running the ball up to the hole. Take out a 60 degree wedge and hit different shots around the green. Some high some low and some in between. The sky is the limit but the more you work on this the better you will handle different shots on the course.

3. Improve your technique. Having a good short game really comes down to being able to chip the ball so that it goes the right distance to get close to the hole. You accomplish this by having a good feel and touch, a good imagination where you can picture the shot you want and need to hit, and with good technique. This is pretty basic with hitting good chip shots. basically your hands need to be able to strike the ball so they are slightly ahead of the ball at impact creating a slight pinching feel into the ball. If you can consistently do this on your short pitch shots then you will be in good shape.

Work on all these suggestions and your short game will improve.
